| Learning for Sustainability Learning for Sustainability is about learning about the earth and the global community, and finding ways in which we can live in harmony with each other. It is coming to a realisation that we cannot continue living the lifestyle we are currently undertaking if we want to live in a world which is healthy. Global climate change, increasing demands on the world’s natural resources, social instability and increasing poverty means that it is absolutely vital for our young people to fully understand, and feel empowered to live more contentedly and harmoniously within, the earth’s capacity. A Helsinki Metropolitan District Councillor noted “Sustainable Development is about using our unlimited brain capacity instead of our limited natural resources”. Young people and their guardians need to explore and understand the issues around the links between their own health, the health of their local environment and their connections to the wider global environment if we are to achieve sustainability. Informed choices and considered decision making is at the heart of ‘Learning for Sustainability’ and if young people can understand how their individual choices have both local and global consequences then they are better equipped to make these balanced decisions. The process of ‘Forum Theatre’ applied to ‘Learning for Sustainability’ allows pupils and their teachers/facilitators to question values and lifestyles, and opens up possibilities for positive change based on collaboration. |
